Summary
A large number of counterfeit products had been offered for sale across online marketplaces in Eastern Europe. The investigation sought to assess the scale of the problem and identify individuals responsible. Through social network analysis undertaken on SeekerXR, Harod identified two dubious companies and several illicit production operations, concluding that one social media platform had played a key role in counterfeit product distribution.
Client
The client was concerned about a significant number of its products being produced illicitly. It required investigative support to understand the scale of the problem and identify those responsible. Not only were there brand protection issues at play but also safety concerns from counterfeit products.
The Challenge
Utilising SeekerXR and advanced open-source research techniques, Harod was tasked to identify which online platforms were marketing counterfeit goods and, crucially, to gather intelligence on those who were selling and producing them.
The Solution
We curated keywords to identify platforms selling the products and, utilising a counterfeit matrix created for the investigation, to assess which products were counterfeit. Information about sellers was then extracted and enriched using SeekerXR, enabling us to map out networks of individuals involved in the operation.
Results
Through the enrichment of seller details, which included their social media platforms, the investigation team uncovered a sophisticated counterfeit production process for the product.
Conclusion
Harod’s investigators identified two suspicious companies involved in chemical supply, uncovering details of more than 30 counterfeit operations. This validated the client’s concerns regarding brand protection and customer safety.
